Developed from the Type J3 submarine design with the hangar opening forward of
the conning tower, the 3 submarines were completed from 1941 to 1942. Equipped with
communications gear, they operated as command ships for groups of
submarines. |

Prototype for the large I-boats (KD2 to KD7 types)
which followed, this submarine design was based on the German U-139 from the First
World War. Completed in 1924, I-51 had a double hull and was a submarine
that was fast enough
to operate with the battle fleet. |

This submarine design was based on Germany's U-139
from WWI circa. She was employed as a training submarine until mid-1942, then stricken from
service. Five additional units were canceled. This boat should not be confused with a
later larger boat which was also called I-52. |

Large double-hull submarines completed 1927 to 1930, they
derived from the previous KD1 and KD2 types. This type is actually
composed of two
slightly different classes - KD3A and KD3B, the latter being 16 inches longer
than stated due to a different bow shape. |

I-68 Class, Type KD-6 Boats: I-68, I-69, I-70, I-71, I-72, I-73, I-74, I-75 Length 343.5 feet Armament: 14 torpedoes, 4 TT fwd, 2 TT, 10cm cannon |
Completed 1934 to 1938, these submarines had the highest surface speed
of any submarines in the world at the time, although their speed was
surpassed slightly by later Japanese submarine designs. The submarines were quite
successful, sinking several capital US warships. |

Three times the displacement of ordinary submarines, the three boats were completed 1944 - 1945. With enough fuel to go around the world one-and-a-half times, they housed three aircraft. Each airplane was capable of delivering a 1,700 pound bomb a distance of 650 miles. |
