The ELCO PT Boat (Patrol Torpedo Boat) was a wooden craft 80 feet long with a beam of 20 feet 8 inches that displaced 54 tons when fully loaded. Powered by three 12-cylinder Packard Marine engines generating a total of 4,500 horsepower and carrying 3,000 gallons of aviation fuel, they could accelerate from 8 to 40 knots in about eleven seconds (and attain a top speed of 48 knots). The all-volunteer crew consisted of about 14 men (1 or 2 of them officers) each trained to do every job for the running of the boat as they didn't have the luxury of replacements. The PT Boat carried more firepower
per pound of boat than any other craft in the Navy. The typical boat was
armed with the following: During WWII nearly 800 PT boats of all types were built. Active in every theatre, they performed important missions from clandestine runs such as evacuating General MacArthur during the fall of the Philippines to supporting the Normandy invasion on D-Day. In the Pacific they assisted in winning major naval battles through the bravery and determination of their commanders who, like future United States President John F. Kennedy in PT-109, took on much larger enemy warships, sometimes unsuccessfully. PT-366 PT-366, as replicated, is an example of a late-war, heavily armed Patrol Torpedo Boat based in the South Pacific Theatre. Built by Harbour Boat Building at Terminal Island, CA in 1943, the boat was in action until the Pacific war drew to a close. The model is replicated has to how the boat was configured while stationed at PT Base 17, Bobon Point, Samar, Philippines in 1945. By this time the role of the PT boats had
changed from night marauders against larger Japanese warships ships to
concentrated attacks on the Japanese supply system and the troop barges that
plied amongst the various island groups. PT-366 is typical of the "barge-busting"
boats used during the final year of the war. The boats in this role were
equipped with an impressive array of weapons that included: On the model the rocket launchers can be rotated to either the outboard firing position or the inboard stowed position. Additionally, the model nicely replicates the mufflers that could either direct the exhaust through the mufflers and out underwater for maximum stealth or straight out for maximum power.
