Essentially an improved version of the pre-war Brooklyn Class design, they had one less 6-inch gun turret in order to carry a much larger anti-aircraft battery. Built in larger numbers than any other cruiser class in history, 39 hulls were ordered of which 27 were completed as cruisers, 9 as Independence Class Light Fleet Aircraft Carriers, and 3 hulls were cancelled.

The Baltimore cruiser design had four triple 6" guns, six twin 5" guns, four twin 40mm (later four quad and six twin 40mm) and ten 20mm. The ships carried four seaplanes that were launched from two aft catapults.

The Cleveland design was very successful - especially in the Pacific Theatre where many of the ships saw extensive action and  proved able to withstand very heavy battle damage. The powerful anti-aircraft armament became increasing important against Kamikaze attacks, and not a single ship was lost in combat.

Most of the Baltimore Class ships were extensively modified. From CL-66 onwards the aluminum deckhouse was replaced by a steel one. Badly overloaded by 1945, most of the class was scrapped in the late 1950s to early 1960s. However, six ships were converted to missile cruisers in the late 1950s and continued to serve for a decade or more afterwards. Those ships were Galveston, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Providence, Springfield and Topeka. CL-92 Little Rock, serves today as a memorial in Buffalo New York while CL-103 Wilkes-Barre is an artificial reef in the Florida Keys.
