LCU-1466 Class
Constructed during the early 1950s,  these craft are enlarged versions of the WWII LCT Mk-5s and have better crew accommodations. Initially designated Landing Ships, Utility (LSU), they were redesignated Landing Craft, Utility  (LCU) in 1952 and  classified as service craft. The mission of the LCU is to land and/or retrieve personnel and equipment during amphibious operations. Scheduled to perform after the initial assault waves of an amphibious operation, the LCU has the capability of sustained sea operations for approximately seven days. Each LCU has its own galley and berthing spaces.

LCU-1600 Class
(includes 1610, 1627 & 1646 classes)
Built in the 1970s, the craft are 135 feet long and can hold 11 crew members. Although the Navy now has the newer LCAC, the LCUs can carry much heavier loads - 180 tons of equipment (can be three M-60 tanks or 450 combat equipped Marines). However, the LCU requires a 9 foot draft beneath its keel to operate safely, making it less versatile than the LCAC hovercraft. LCUs contain extensive living compartments to operate independently of the amphibious ships from which they disembark.

LCU-2000 Class
Currently the fleet of these 174-foot long craft is still being added to. With a cargo capacity of 350 tons and a deck area of 2500 sq ft, they have room for five M1 Main Battle Tanks or thirty 20' containers or twelve 40' containers.

Equipped with the latest navigation, communications and electronic equipment including an automatic pilot and steering system, they can sustain a crew of 13 personnel for up to 18 days.. Estimated useful life is 25 years.
