CV-1 "USS Langley", circa 1920

Built as the collier Jupiter, she was converted to the first United States aircraft carrier  in 1920 and renamed "USS Langley". In 1937 she was converted to a seaplane tender and re-designated AV-3. In February 1943 she was bombed by Japanese aircraft and scuttled by her escorting destroyers about 75 miles south of Tjilatjap, Java.


CV-2 & CV-3 Lexington Class, circa 1927

Originally laid down as Lexington Class battle cruisers, the 2 ships were finished as aircraft carriers in 1927. "Lexington" was damaged in battle and subsequently scuttled in 1942. "Saratoga" survived the war and was sunk during the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests in July 1946.


CV-4 "USS Ranger", circa 1934

CV-4 was the first United States warship designed and built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier. Commissioned in1934, she survived the war fighting in several different theatres and was sold for scrap in 1947.
