“It’s okay, you can call it ugly.” While there might not be much outward beauty in the PZL Wilga, it certainly has some fascinating attributes. Built in Poland by PZL "Warszawa-Okęcie" as an all around utility airplane, the Wilga is equipped for glider towing, banner towing, parachute jumping, aerial photography, medical evacuation and just about any other task that a light airplane might be asked to do. It can easily carry four people and all their stuff - except for cross-country travel as it has a very limited range. However, the view from the Wilga is exceptional - especially from the back seat. The bottoms of the windows are below the level of the seats and there is no strut. The front seat view is blocked a bit by the panel, but other than that, it too is excellent. Of course, the doors can be removed if a closer-to-nature experience is desired. Parachute training is one of the Wilga’s military missions, so the step on the right side is specially designed for that purpose. The door is removed for jump flights along with the rear seats; the right front stick is removed; the right front seat is turned around; and a handhold bar is attached to the doorframe. Departing the airplane in flight could hardly be easier. The aircraft also needs little real estate to operate. Landing speed is 40 knots and only about 300 feet of of grass strip is required to take off or land. Flying the Wilga is very much like flying a big boat. The airplane seems to roll with every current and go up and down with every wave of air. It is somewhat heavy and has a high wing loading, but it also generates a tremendous amount of lift. Length:
