In the early 1980's, McDonnell Douglas planned an improved version of the DC-10 which would be 12 meters longer than the DC-10-10 and offer space for up to 400 passengers. Using improved wings as well as new engines, the new aircraft would have higher efficiency. However, due to the relatively high number of accidents of past DC-10s, McDonnell Douglas finally decided against developing a new DC 10-version and instead, in 1984, presented plans for a totally new type of aircraft - the MD-11. The MD-11, launched on December 30th, 1986, is the world's only modern large, wide-cabin tri-jet. It comes in four versions - passenger, all freighter, convertible freighter and "combi," where both passengers and freight are carried on the main upper deck and additional freight is carried below. In the passenger version the seating varies from 285 to 410. Below the main deck, the MD-11 provides more space for container or on pallet cargo - after passenger bags are loaded - than any other jetliner. In the freighter version it has over 22,000 cu ft of space. The extended-range version has a range of approximately 8,225 statute miles. Three engines of 60,000 lbs thrust each power the plane which typically cruises at 31,000 feet while doing 590 mph. Length: 201 ft
