In 1959 - when William Lear announced he was going to build a small, six-passenger jet plane - critics asked, "Who's going to buy it?" Today the name Lear is synonymous with the phrase "executive jet". The Lear Fan 2100 was Bill Lear's final project. The two engine pusher prop-jet is uniquely constructed almost entirely of graphite/epoxy and Kevlar composite materials which are half the weight but just as strong as aluminum thereby making it lighter, faster and more economical than conventionally made business aircraft. The prototype Lear Fan 2100 made its maiden flight on the incredible date of December 32nd, 1980 - the calendar having been extended by Lear to meet the deadline imposed by the British government who helped finance the project. Only three Lear Fans were ever made. However, the knowledge gained in composite technology transformed the field of aviation. William Lear also invented the 8-track stereo, automatic pilot and aircraft radio transceiver. Length:
