The UV-18 is the military version of the well known DeHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter and can be equipped with floats or skis. An oxygen system and navigation package gives all-weather capability at a ceiling of 25,000 feet. Designed to replace the DHC-3 Otter, the Twin Otter made its first flight in 1965 and entered production the following year. By 1982 over 800 DHC-6s were built and - when production ended in 1988 - a total of 844 aircraft had been built for various military and commercial customers. This general-purpose civil and military transport is used by regional airlines in Alaska and other areas with short or rough runways. The US Air Force Academy Cadet Parachuting Program uses three UV-18B aircraft which can carry 17 jumpers. These Twin Otters are the only three owned by the Air Force. The US Army National Guard in Alaska has replaced its UV-18As with the C-23B. Seating: 20 |
