The Goose began life before WWII as Grumman's first design intended for civilian use but most of the production ultimately was taken military orders. Grumman's extensive experience in building fighters for the US Navy was reflected in the Goose's rugged construction which included a braced tail-plane and a deep two step hull with retractable undercarriage. It first flew in June 1937 with the initial civil production machines designated the G21A. The arrival of WW2 saw the Goose (a name bestowed by Royal Air Force) enter military service with a number of allied air arms. Postwar surplus aircraft found their way to commercial operators worldwide - their unique amphibious capability and rugged construction ensuring their popularity. Some Goose aircraft have been converted to turboprops. Noteworthy are the Turboprop Goose and the G21G - the latter with enlarged cabin windows and retractable wingtip floats. Total Goose production exceeded 300 aircraft, most of which were originally delivered to military customers. Production ceased in 1945 but small numbers of the aircraft still remain in service worldwide. Capacity: Pilot + eight
