Formed in 1970, Airbus Industrie is a multi-national effort between England, France and Germany to create a high-capacity twin-jet transport (that developed into the A300). As Airbus was finalizing plans for the A300, many airlines expressed interest in a smaller, extended range model. Following a number of design studies, Airbus announced that it would proceed with a derivative of the A300 called the A310. Flying first in April of 1982, the A310 entered service a year later (with Lufthansa and Swissair at first). The A300 and A310 aircraft make use of much the same construction to minimize costs. The A310 combines a shortened A300 fuselage with a new tail assembly and wing, the latter making use of many advanced high-lift devices allowing wingspan and wing area to be greatly reduced. In addition, the A310 features a sophisticated two-crew cockpit with advanced digital avionics. Seating from 210 to 250 passengers, the initial A310-200 model was developed into a full range of passenger, freight, and mixed passenger/cargo versions that sold well throughout the airline market. Production has now switched to the A310-300 extended range model and should continue into the early 2000s. By 2001, a total of some 260 A310s had been built. Today Airbus Industrie has become the world's second largest manufacturer of civil airliners which seat over 100 passengers. In it's first 25 years Airbus has sold over 2,100 aircraft, with more than 1400 in service worldwide. The consortium is headquartered in southwest France near the city of Toulouse and owned by Europe's four leading aerospace companies (Aerospatiale of France, Daimler-Benz Aerospace Airbus of Germany, British Aerospace, and Casa of Spain).
