Boeing launched its 747 program in 1966 when Pan Am placed an order for 25 of the giant double-decker jets. After delivering 167 of the original 747-100s, Boeing moved on to the more powerful 747-100B and then delivered 225 of the 747-200 series. Two 747-200s serve as presidential airplanes (Air Force Ones) and another was modified to carry the space shuttle between California and Florida. The Air Force Ones are Boeing 747-200B aircraft that were extensively modified to meet presidential requirements. Delivered in 1990, they replaced the Boeing 707-320 airframe that had served the nation's chief executives for nearly 30 years. The flying "Oval Office", which totals 4,000 square feet, features a conference/dining room, quarters for the president and first lady, and an office area for senior staff members. Another office can be converted into a medical facility when required. There are work and rest areas for the presidential staff, media representatives and Air Force crews; and two galleys which are capable of providing food for 100 people. The communication system - which includes 85 telephones as well as multi-frequency radios for air-to-air, air-to-ground and satellite communications - provides worldwide capability to transmit and receive on both normal and secure channels. The wiring in each presidential plane - which totals twice the wiring found in a typical 747 - is shielded from any electromagnetic pulse such as that generated by a thermonuclear blast. Additionally, the planes are equipped to detect and protect from an attack by missiles Air Force One provides longer range for presidential travel. Self-sufficient at airports around the world and carrying its own ground crews, the aircraft are modified for aerial refueling to provide virtually unlimited range. The 89th Presidential Airlift Group at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland is responsible for operating both Air Force One aircraft. Crew:
