The Coronado was the Navy's long range reconnaissance aircraft. It resulted from a US Navy request for the development of a maritime patrol bomber larger than the PBY Catalina - one that would have increased performance and a good weapons load capability. Though the prototype first flew in December 17th, 1937, the Navy did not have the funds at that time to procure the aircraft Therefore the manufacturer - Consolidated - had to wait 15 months before orders were placed. During that time the aircraft's stability and hydrodynamic performance were improved but it never had the success of its precursor. Consolidated delivered 176 PB2Ys to the US Navy and an additional 33 for use by other organizations or countries. Besides the production from Consolidated, Rohr also manufactured 41 PB2Ys. Variants served with the US Navy from 1940 onwards, with 10 examples being used by the Royal Air Force. Some were also used as transports because of their capacious fuselage. These PB2Y-3R or PB2Y-5R versions had all armament removed and the gun turret positions were faired over. On December 31st, 1940, VP-13 became the first squadron to receive the PB2Y Coronado. Crew:
