The Nieuport 17c, appearing in mid-1916, was the type that became best associated with the classic image of the French built Nieuport aircraft. Some earlier types were the smaller Nieuport 11 (known as "Bebe") and the Nieuport 16, which maintained the same airframe as the 11 but with a more powerful engine making the Nieuport 16 quite a handful to control. The Nieuport 17 remedied the problems associated with the type 16 by providing more wing area to lift the 110 hp engine, as well as a number of structural refinements that made it stronger than its predecessors. The 17c introduced a 120 hp engine. The Nieuport 17 had flying qualities that were far and above most of its contemporaries (it is as easy to fly as a Cessna), was very maneuverable and could out-climb all but the Fokker D.VIIs and D.VIIIs. However, it was slow and couldn't be taken into an extended power dive because it might lose the lower wing - especially if it hadn't been tightened properly as changes in humidity caused the clamp that held the wing on to sometimes loosen. The Type 17 equipped every French fighter squadron at some time in 1916, and was flown by all the great aces of the period including Ball, Bishop and Nungesser. At first the aircraft was armed with a Lewis gun mounted on top of the wing which fired above the propeller but, when the synchronizing gear was perfected to allow a machine gun to fire through the propeller, the Nieuport was equipped with the new Vickers gun. Rawlings, Cassidy and Skinners Nieuport 17's are now flying on the big screen in the new movie, "FLYBOYS", produced by Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independence Day, The Patriot, Godzilla). Length:
19 ft
