When the Hawker Typhoon proved to be inadequate for the role of interceptor, it was decided - in 1941 - to create a version of the Typhoon that could fulfill that role. Initially called Typhoon Mk.II, the project was renamed Tempest in early 1942 and took advantage of the just then aborted Tornado project by receiving the engines that had been allotted to the development of the Tornado. The Tempest Mk.I flew in February 1943, but some problems with the Sabre IV engine convinced the developers to utilize the Sabre II engine on the Tempest Mk.V. First flight of the Tempest Mk.V occurred on June 21st, 1943 and 805 models were built. The Tempest Mk.V was followed by the Tempest Mk.II which used the Centaurus engine - which eliminated the large under-chin air intake and so gave the aircraft a much more aerodynamic profile in the nose. The Tempest Mk.II was mainly utilized after the war (as F Mk.II ) and remained in service until 1951. In 1947, India purchased 89 F Mk.IIs and Pakistan 24. Crew:
