The Hawker Sea Fury (Seafury) is a modified Hawker Tempest made slightly smaller and lighter to meet specifications for a new fighter-bomber that was carrier capable. First flight of the Fury occurred on September 1st, 1944 and production contracts were in place for 200 land-based aircraft for the RAF and another 200 carrier-based aircraft for the Fleet Air Arm. However, when the war ended, the RAF contract was cancelled but design and development on the Sea Fury continued. The first Sea Fury powered by a Bristol Centaurus 12 cylinder radial engine flew in February 1945 but the first full navy version with folding wings did not fly until late 1947. Fifty of these were completed and designated Mark 10. The Mark 11 introduced the more powerful 18 cylinder Centaurus radial and 615 aircraft of this type were built, becoming operational with the Royal Navy in May, 1948. At least 66 of these were delivered to Australia and Canada. The RN also received 60 two-seat T.Mk 20 trainers in the early 1950s. Additionally, Sea Fury's were exported to several other countries including Burma, Cuba, Egypt, Iraq, the Netherlands and Pakistan. Early in the Korean war, Sea Furies operated very successfully in a ground attack role from the decks of Royal Navy aircraft carriers. Today the few remaining Sea Furies are highly prized with at least ten having been modified for air racing. Several others are very active on the air show circuit. Crew:
