The Bristol F2b - a development on the F2a - came into service in April 1917 with Squadron 48 during the Battle of Arras. Designed as a reconnaissance aircraft capable of defending itself, the design was so successful that soon additional orders were placed to use it as a fighter - later becoming known as the "Brisfit Fighter". A two-seater, the F2b had a single Vickers .303 synchronized machine gun in the front and a single Lewis .303 machine gun that swiveled for the observer in the rear. Driven by a powerful 275 hp V-12 Rolls Royce Falcon engine, the aircraft was fast but could not turn as tightly as a single seater. First flown in the tight defensive formations normal for two-seaters of the time, the aircraft gained its reputation as a fighter when tactics were changed and it was flown in a more aggressive manner. By the end of the war the F2b had been used for offensive patrols, photographic reconnaissance, escort fighting and ground attacks. The Bristol Fighter was such a versatile design that it continued in service until long after the Great War and equipped the peacetime Royal Air Force until 1932. Crew:
Pilot and observer/rear gunner
