The BE bi-plane was developed in 1912 by Geoffrey De Havilland and by August of 1914 it was the standard military aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps. Although slow, it was stable and played an important reconnaissance role in the early part of WWI.

The design of the plane was constantly being revised and during the war there were five different versions.

The BE-2 - with improved tail and wing design - was used by the Royal Flying Corps for reconnaissance and light bombing on the Western Front during 1914.

The BE-2b had better cockpit protection and more refined controls.

The  BE-2c appeared in the autumn 1915 with a modified engine for extra stability and the addition of an observer's machine-gun. However, it was still inferior to the German Fokker D-VII.

Further development saw the arrival of the BE-2d which could travel longer distances than previous models.

Finally, in 1916,  the BE-2e arrived, Faster than all previous models, the BE-2e remained in use on the Western Front until mid 1917. In 1918 the BE-2e was being mainly used for defense against Zeppelin raids or on anti-submarine duties for the Royal Navy. It was also widely used to train pilots and more than 3,000 BE-2s of all types had been manufactured by the War's end.
