The Sikorsky built UH-60A Black Hawk, when equipped with the Air Methods Multi-Mission MedEvac System, is the US Army's UH-60Q Medevac helicopter. It is an effective aviation platform that functions in a variety of roles - either on the battlefield or in response to civil disaster and international relief operations. The UH-60Q can fly a six member medical team into a forward area; then convert to evacuate six wounded as fast as they can be loaded; and then convert again in less than two minutes to transport cargo back to the forward area - all without removing any equipment. The UH-60Q provides a six patient litter system with a state-of-the-art medical interior that provides on-board oxygen generation; medical suction at each litter position; environmental control system; cardiac monitoring systems; defibrillators and ventilators; and provision for stowing intra-venous solutions. It is simply the best in aero-medical evacuation by providing greater transport speed at a longer range and increased survivability for acute care patients. Additionally, the helicopter is equipped with NVG Compatible Lighting to help its staff of 3 flight surgeons provide the best possible care. The UH-60Q uses a Global Positioning System and has a Forward Looking Infrared Imaging System and Aircraft Mission Planning Systems that allow it to perform in all types of weather doing battlefield evacuation, combat search and rescue, hospital ship lifeline missions, deep operations support, forward surgical team transport and medical logistics re-supply. The UH-60Q is being upgraded into the HH-60L which will incorporate an electric hoist and an upgraded navigation package that will include integrated Doppler/GPS and a Personnel Locator System. Development of the UH-60Q began after the Gulf War during which UH-60A Medevac Black Hawks had operated in forward areas. However, the initial idea of aerial medical evacuation stems from the Vietnam War when UH-1V Huey helicopters transported the wounded. Crew: Three
