Frank Robinson - president and founder of the Robinson Helicopter Company - first began design work on a light four-seat piston-engine helicopter in 1986. The design philosophy envisioned developing a relatively fast and useful four-seat light helicopter with performance close to that of turbine-powered aircraft - but with significantly lower acquisition and maintenance costs. The result was the R-22 and this was followed by the R-44 which is much larger and almost as long as the turbine-powered Bell Jet Ranger. First flight of the R-44 occurred in 1990 and FAA certification was awarded in late 1992. The R-44 proved almost immediately to be very popular and over a thousand have been built for customers worldwide. In April 2000, the R-44 Raven was introduced featuring adjustable pedals, improved tail rotor bearings and a hydraulic flight control system. The R44 Clipper, a version of the R44 Raven I, is unique in that it has fixed skids that contain emergency pop-out floats for safety on extended flights over water. A low center-of-gravity enhances the helicopter's stability on rough seas. The Clipper is also offered with fixed floats and this creates only a minor loss in cruising speed. Importantly, the advanced design of the floats is a single-bag system that provides much safer lift-off from the water. The Clipper with fixed-floats is further offered customized for the needs of TV stations (R-44 newscopter which can carry a TV camera in a nose turret) and various law enforcement agencies. In the latter case the helicopter can be equipped with either IR sensor or television camera in the nose turret, a video monitor, a searchlight and bulged door windows for easier observation of spotters. The R44 Raven II was launched July 2002, it offers more power, gross weight and altitude performance. The Raven II configurations include a trainer, newscopter, law enforcement and Clipper II. By April 2005, Robinson had delivered 6,000 helicopters. Crew:
