The OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, built by Textron (Bell Helicopter Co) at Fort Worth in Texas, is a two-seat, single engine, light observation helicopter originally designed as an interim scout until the RAH-66 Comanche is fielded. The above-the-rotor Mast Mounted Sight (MMS) houses a low light television, a thermal imaging system and laser range finder/designator. The Laser Designator can provide autonomous designation for the laser HELLFIRE or remote designation for other laser-guided precision weapons. Air-to-Air Stingers provide security against enemy aircraft. The Kiowa Warrior performs reconnaissance, security, command and control, target acquisition/designation, and defensive air combat missions. A highly accurate navigation system permits precise target location that can be handed off to other engagement systems via the Airborne Target Handover System. The Kiowa Warrior is designed to operate autonomously at standoff ranges providing armed reconnaissance, command and control, and target acquisition and designation under day/night, hot, and adverse weather conditions. The Kiowa Warrior can designate targets for precision-guided munitions carried by Apache helicopters, other airborne weapons platforms, or ground based systems. Using the Airborne Target Handover System (ATHS), the Kiowa Warrior is capable of rapidly providing adjustment of conventional artillery or handing targets to other airborne weapons platforms equipped with digital receiving equipment. The Kiowa Warrior is armed with Air-to-Air Stinger (ATAS) and Air-to-Ground (ATG) Hellfire Missiles, 2.75 inch rockets, or .50 caliber machine gun. Multipurpose Light Helicopter (MPLH) kits provide multi- mission flexibility for limited troop transportation, emergency medical evacuation, external cargo and rapid deployment relocation. The OH-58 Kiowa Warrior is fielded in air cavalry armed reconnaissance units and attack battalions of selected contingency divisions. The Kiowa Warrior provides the Army with a versatile, lethal, deployable aircraft capable of seeing, fighting, and surviving in all types of terrain, adverse visibility, and battlefield environments, day or night.
