The MD520N features the NOTAR anti-torque system for superior safety and quiet flying. Approximately 70 percent of all tail rotor accidents could be avoided with the NOTAR system.

The Honolulu Fire Department operates two MD-520Ns (N5232G called 'Air 1' and N52000 called 'Air 2') and each is crewed by a single pilot. Missions consist of search and rescue, bucket drops, and fire department support. The choppers are not used to provide aero-medical transport.
