Arguably the most successful and versatile light helicopter in the history, the 500 series story started in the early 1960's. The Hughes Aircraft Company built the Model 369 as a prototype for the US Army's need to have an extremely maneuverable observation helicopter. Designed to be used as a military scout during the Vietnam war, the helicopter was re-designated OH-6A Cayuse. It was powered by a 253 hp Allison T63-A-5A turbo-shaft driving a 4-bladed main rotor, and had an offset V-tail. In 1982, the 500E was introduced - the nose was reshaped, and passenger comfort improved with increased head and leg room. The MD prefix was added and the Hughes name dropped when McDonnell Douglas acquired Hughes Helicopters in January 1984, McDonnell Douglas sold the range to MD Helicopters, a division of Netherlands based RDM, in February 1999. The airframes are produced for them by Kaman. Fuselage length: 24ft 7in Related Links |
