The UH-1N is one of the most widely used, versatile, and durable helicopters ever built which is used by the  Marines for utility support in the ship-to-shore phase of an amphibious assault and subsequent operations ashore. Early models were used extensively in Vietnam for medical-evacuation and command-and-control missions.

The UH-1N - derived from the Bell 212 - entered Marine Corps service in 1964. It can carry 8-10 combat-loaded Marines and/or supplies. As a flying ambulance, it has room for six litter patients and one attendant. It may be armed with 7.62mm M60 machine guns, GAU-2B/A machine guns, .50 caliber machine guns, and 2.75 inch rockets.

There are six composite light attack squadrons in the active forces and three Reserve squadrons; each will contain 18 AH-1W Super Cobras and nine UH-1Ns.

A service life extension program has been funded for these aircraft, and a midlife upgrade was planned for the 1996 budget for safety and performance-margin upgrades.

The older Hueys are commonly equipped with the M-197 20mm "Gatling Gun" which is a M-61 cut down to three barrels. A miniaturized version of the M-61 was developed using 7.62mm NATO compatible ammunition. This is the GAU-2B/A which is best known as the M-134 or Mini-gun. Minis were first mounted in pods and hung on helicopters and aircraft for attacking infantry and soft targets with high volumes of fire. One Mini-gun could put a 7.62mm bullet into every square foot of a football field! The problem with the Mini-gun in a pod was it was limited by the amount of ammunition the pod could carry. Designs soon appeared that turned the Mini-gun into a turret-mounted gun (AH-1G Cobra); into a flexible gun mounted in the doors of Hueys (as shown in this model); same type of mount in HH-3 Jolly Green Giants; and twin side mounts that replaced the four M-60C guns on the UH-1B/C gunship helicopters. While the magazine is designed for 3,500 rounds, in actual use it was found that one could cram in an extra 300 rounds for a total of 3,800.
