In 1955 Bell won a US Army competition to design a utility helicopter suitable for front-line casualty evacuation. The production version stemming from the Bell 204 helicopter was originally designated HU-1, hence it came to be called Huey. Later the designation was changed to UH-1 and the official US Army name for the helicopter is “Iroquois”.

The UH–1 Huey entered U.S. Army service in 1958 with nearly 10,000 different aircraft having been procured over thirty five years. The Huey was the first mass-produced turbine powered helicopter to enter Army service.

UH-1B Iroquois saw the introduction of the 1100hp Lycoming T53-L-11 engine. It carried a crew of 2 plus 7 troops or 3 stretchers and 2 sitting casualties. For armed support missions it was equipped with rocket packs and electrically controlled machine guns and saw extensive service in Vietnam as a troop carrier, aerial ambulance or heavily armed gunship.

Bell Helicopter proposed upgrading UH-1Bs with the "540" rotor system. The first UH-1B/UH-1C hybrid was a plain UH-1B with the "540" rotor head only. It was discovered that in Vietnam's "hot and high" flying environment their performance was marginal.

The 2nd type of hybrid was the UH-1B with the 540 rotor, T53-L-11D 1100hp engine upgrade, power train, and tail rotor. These modifications improved performance but - with the increased torque from the more powerful engine and larger tail rotor - the tail had to be modified by adding to the camber and increasing the width. These modifications were incorporated into what became the UH-1C model. The Bell UH-1C (1965) could seat nine troops, had the improved rotor and had a greater range.

The rotor on the UH-1C was the prototype of the rotor system later used - without stabilizer bar and dampers - on the AH-1G Cobra .

In many ways the Huey symbolizes the Vietnam War and still today it remains in Army and National Guard service.
