The Bell 407 helicopter was built on experience gained in composite material technology developed for the US Army Kiowa Warrior.  It is a very high performance, rugged, reliable and simple machine. It has "sports car" like handling combined with exceptional hot and high hover capability and unparalleled rotor control authority.

The aircraft is loaded with numerous safety features like a  rupture resistant fuel system, rollover bulkheads and rugged energy attenuating skids. Pilot friendly aspects include automatic pilot exceedance warnings, a twist grip throttle on the collective and a FADEC for the engine.  The fuselage is of large composite panels to ensure ruggedness and ease of maintenance. The helicopter is an ideal platform for carrying out emergency winching operations.

The Bell 407 strikes the perfect balance between performance, reliability and mission flexibility making it ideal for precarious rescue missions. A smooth ride - essential for critically injured persons - is provided by the all composite, four bladed rotor system that also provides excellent hover, performance and speed. The 407 is ideal for extreme environments: high altitudes, arctic conditions or even the hottest locales. Additionally, quick and easy patient loading and unloading is provided by a standard bi-fold door with a 61 inch opening.

Angel 2 is operated as a Rescue and EMS helicopter by Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service in New South Wales, Australia. Westpac is an aero-medical search and rescue service that commenced operations out of Newcastle in 1975. In 2000, they started operating from Tamworth. They are funded by the New South Wales Department of Health, corporate sponsorship and the community. With an annual operating budget off $6.5 million, they need to raise over $2.5 million from the community - which roughly includes the Central Coast, Hunter, Manning, Lower North Coast, New England and North West regions of NSW.

The total flight crew staff employed to cover the Newcastle and Tamworth bases are 7 fulltime pilots and 2 casuals; 10 full-time air crewmen; and 12 casual rescue crewmen (these all have other fulltime employment eg. Police, Ambulance, Lifeguards, Electricians, Radiographers etc) .
