The Su-27 (designated as Flanker by NATO) is a front-line interceptor and air superiority fighter designed by Sukhoi to counter the F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons which, when they came into service in the mid-1970s, put the then Eastern Bloc fighter pilots at a distinct disadvantage. Designed as a high performance fighter with a fly-by-wire control system and the ability to carry up to 10 air-to-air missiles, the highly maneuverable Su-27 is one of the most imposing fighters ever built. It is equipped to operate autonomously in combat over hostile territory, in escort of deep-penetration strike aircraft and in the suppression of enemy airfields. The aircraft provides general air defences in cooperation with ground and airborne control stations. The first Flanker-A prototypes flew in 1977 and entered service as the Flanker-B in 1984. The Su-27 fighter plane has subsequently set more than 40 world speed records for altitude and take-off. It was the forerunner of an entire family of planes including the Su-27UB training plane, the Su-33 ship-based fighter, the Su-37 Super Flanker multi-mission plane and the Su-32FN, a two-seater specialized plane. The latest version is the Su-27SM which is an upgrade for the Russian Air Force that has a strengthened fuselage to carry extra weapons, an improved N001 radar, a glass cockpit with 3-color multi-function displays and improved avionics. The first was delivered in December 2003. The export version is the Su-27SK and is in service with Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine India, Indonesia and Vietnam. China builds it under license as the F-11. Crew:
