Although the F-60U looks very much like the Fokker 50 it was developed from (which in itself derives from the F-27) it is a bit longer than the F-50 and has a large cargo door so it can transport F-16 jet engines. It was produced on request of the Dutch Air Force, who needed it to replace its ageing F-27 Friendship transport aircraft.

The F-60U is a typical military transport aircraft and can be used for many tasks. Apart from transporting large items, the plane can be quickly adapted for passengers, medical transport, and dropping paratroops.

First flight of the F-60 was 1985.
