The F-16 evolved from a 1972 USAF Lightweight Fighter prototype program which was seeking a small, lightweight, low cost, air superiority day fighter designed for high performance and easy maintenance. It achieved combat ready status in October 1980. The F-16CJ is an improved version of the F-16A. In the early 1980's, the Multi-national Staged Improvement Plan was introduced to gradually increase the capabilities of the aircraft. Planned improvements were to increase the day attack fighter performance along with night fighting and multi-role capabilities that included limited SAM suppression. Stage I improvements included structural and wiring changes for advanced avionics along with an environmental control system to cool the new electronic equipment. Stage II was used primarily to install the avionics made possible by the Stage I modifications. The gross take-off weight was increased by almost 2,000 lbs because of critical re-design of the aircraft's skin thickness and structure. Stage III improvement included provisions for mounting a Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting for Infra-Red (LANTIRN) pod, a Terrain-Following Radar and Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) pod, an external 30mm gun pod and electronic counter-measures (ECM). The F-16CJ and the two-seat combat-capable F-16D trainer are currently in service with the USAF and many foreign nations including Egypt, Israel, South Korea and Turkey. Specs:
