The multi-role Hornet constitutes the primary air capability of the Canadian Armed Forces and is Canada's means of exercising active control over unwanted activities in domestic and international airspace. 3rd Wing at Bagotville, Quebec and 4th Wing at Cold Lake, Alberta continue to fly CF-18s for domestic and international missions in support of NORAD, NATO and other government organizations. The model represents Aircraft # 188720 of the 410th Cougar Squadron. Designed by Jim Belliveau, the paint scheme has both a Siberian tiger and the Squadron's Cougar emblem and marks the 10th anniversary of specialty color schemes on 410 Squadron demonstration jets. Every two years frontline squadrons from air forces across North America and Europe gather for a week of flying and ground competitions in what is known as the Tiger Meet of the Americas. In September of 2003 it was hosted at Cold Lake. Originating in Europe, the event was open only to squadrons using tiger motifs or having tiger mascots but has been expanded to include all ‘feline’ flying squadrons. Many of Canada's one hundred and eighteen CF-18s
(procured between 1982 and 1988) are being modernized to ensure they
remain combat ready and inter-operable with coalition forces.
Currently 59 single and 21 double-seat aircraft are undergoing
a massive upgrade to their avionics and weapons systems to ensure
operational capability to their "estimated life expectancy" which
will be reached in the year 2017. Specs: CF-118A and CF-118B
