A-1H (AD-6) Skyraider, US Navy

|
In 1963, the U.S. Air Force began a program to modify the Navy's AD-5 Skyraider for service in Vietnam and re-designated it theA-1E. The aircraft's middle compartment could be readily equipped with passenger seats, facilities for litters or provisions for carrying heavy cargo. Further development resulted in the A-1H (AD-6 under old designation system) and also the A-1J (AD-7). Unlike the A-1E, the A-1H & A-1J were single seat attack aircraft. Because of their ability to carry large bomb loads, absorb heavy ground fire and fly for long periods at low altitude, the A-1E's, -H's and -J's were particularly well suited for close support missions. Four 20-mm guns were installed in the wings. The aircraft was equipped to carry various combinations of bombs, rockets, mines, gun pods, and other stores on external wing stations. For long range missions, the airplane was be equipped with auxiliary fuel tanks internally as well as externally. The A-1H (AD-6) and A-1J (AD-7) were the final versions of the Skyraider. Length: 39
